Lecture Series
Hoagy B. Carmichael’s Top Ten Favourite Artifacts
Thursday, September 4th at 7:00pm
Hoagy B. Carmichael has researched the history of the river extensively. For more than a decade he traveled half the world to track down different tidbits and treasures, trawling through archives, tracing and visiting descendants of former camp owners, and from this exhaustive research he has written the definitive two-volume The Grand Cascapedia River: A History.
During this special evening lecture, Hoagy will share with us his top ten favourite artifacts at the museum. The objects will be on display and Hoagy will tell some of the fascinating stories behind the artifacts. Some of the artifacts will include the rod belonging to Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, who fished the river between 1893 and 1912, a collection of Lady Amherst flies tied by James Bonbright who made annual trips to the river for 80 years between 1910 and 1990, and a rare Bogdan reel which belong to Frank Goulet, another important man who helped shape the history of the river and camps as we know them today.
Join us for an informative and fascinating evening! We look forward to seeing you there!

Lecture Series: The Mi’gmaq Place Names Project
An Evening with Danielle Cyr
Thursday, August 7th 2014 at 7:00pm
Dr. Danielle E. Cyr will be giving a presentation and talk on the The Mi’gmaq Place Names Project on Thursday, August 7th, at 7:00 P.M. at the Cascapedia River Museum.
Danielle E. Cyr, a retired professor of York University, has dedicated a significant portion of her career to the study of First Nations languages. She co-authored, with Emmanuel Metallic from Listuguj, the most comprehensive Mi’gmaq dictionary published in the last century. She also studied the Mi’gmaq ideographic writing and assisted in a European exhibition celebrating it, and she spearheaded the Mi’gmaq Place Names Project here on the Gaspe.
The study of language can open fascinating windows into culture, knowledge, and world views and the Mi’gmaq Place Names Project has certainly achieved that. The museum is proud to host Danielle E. Cyr’s lecture on this seminal project.

Lecture Series: A Vision of Tibet
A Photographic Presentation with Jacqueline Deraspe
Thursday, July 17th at 7:00pm
Tibet is a nation of infinite beauty; a landscape which captivates the imagination, awakening all of the senses and inspiring personal reflection. “Through a voice of the heart,” Jaqueline was able to connect with Tibetan refugees in their grief, wisdom, and compassion.
Jaqueline Deraspe is a retired nurse who dedicated a part of her career to working with First Nations peoples, including the Montagnais of Pakuashipi, the Inuit of Salluit, and the Mi’kmaq of Gesgapegiag. Those experiences nourished her desire to connect with and help people from other cultures. For several years Jaqueline has been traveling to different countries, trekking and doing volunteer work, most recently in Tibet and Nepal.
Her bilingual presentation will give a brief history of Tibet, its architecture, and life under Chinese occupation. Through her photos she will share her experiences and relate the privileged moments she spent amongst the Tibetan people.

Paul Almond’s The Gunner Book Launch and Signing
Hosted in Conjunction with the Bay Chaleur Military Museum
Thursday, July 3rd at 7:00pm
Paul Almond will be launching his latest publication, The Gunner, on Thursday, July 3rd at seven in the evening at the Cascapedia River Museum. The Gunner, the sixth and most recent book in The Alford Saga, is set during the First World War and recounts the story of Eric Alford, whose peaceful life on the Gaspe Coast is shattered by his decision to follow his elder brother John into the cataclysm of death and destruction that was the Great War. The story of Eric and John Alford are based in part on the lives of Eric, Paul’s father, and the Ven. John Macpherson Almond, his uncle whose histories are shared in the Bay Chaleur Military Museum. The author did extensive research in advance of writing this historical novel, consulting with historians and spending many hours at the National Archives of Canada. Almond’s masterful story-telling skills vividly bring to life the terror, tragedy, and heroism of the First World War. We look forward to seeing you there!
Paul Almond’s books are being translated into French but only the first two books, The Deserter and Le Défricheur are currently available for purchase at the museum. The third book in the series should be translated sometime in the fall.
