Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 7:00pm

Paul Almond will be giving a presentation and talk on the Alford Saga on Wednesday, August 14th at (7:00 P.M.) seven in the evening at the Cascapedia River Museum. The lecture will explore the inspiration, research, writing, and creation of the Alford Saga B a collection of historical fiction that follows the story of a Gaspesian family spanning 200 years of local heritage which is loosely based on the author=s family history. The saga begins around 1800 with the fictional Thomas Manning choosing to strike out for a new life, deserting service in the British navy and trying to forge a life in the New World, coming ashore on the Gaspe coast. He changes his name to James Alford to avoid being executed as a deserter and it is his story and that of his descendants that is the focus of the following books. The stories told in this unique saga, the meticulous research that has gone into bringing the works to life, as well as the celebration of Gaspesian, and Canadian, heritage that it embodies will all be explored in this exciting lecture event. Paul Almond’s The Chaplain Book Launch and Signing

Hosted in Conjunction with the Bay Chaleur Military Museum

Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 7:00pm

Paul Almond will be launching his latest publication, The Chaplain on Thursday, July 18th at seven in the evening at the Cascapedia River Museum. The Chaplain, the fifth and most recent book in The Alford Saga, is set during the Boer War (1899-1900) and recounts the year that John Alford, known as Jack, spent in South Africa, living and working with Canadian soldiers as a chaplain during the war. Although this is a work of fiction, the character and story of Jack Alford was based in part on the life of Paul Almond’s uncle, Reverend John Macpherson Almond, whose history is featured in the Bay Chaleur Military Museum. The author did extensive research in advance of writing this historical novel, consulting with historians and spending many hours at the National Archives of Canada reading letters sent by soldiers to their loved ones back home during their service in the Boer War. Almond’s masterful story-telling skills vividly recreate this often forgotten period. We look forward to seeing you there!
